Recently, I read a couple posts regarding the city of Mumbai. All of them showcased the city in the most amazing way possible. I've written a few posts about it too, not denying that. So, just to keep things interesting, I decided to put forth things about this city, but with a different perspective. Hope y'all like it. Happy reading! :D
Mumbai is easily one of the top cities on the planet. Almost everyone talks about the 'right' here. I wanna tell you what's wrong with Mumbai.
This is a city that takes pride in the smallest and silliest of things. It's a city that's chaotic yet full of positive vibes. Are people here that non-ambitious that the highlight of their day is convincing an auto-wala to travel a minimum distance? Or the fact that happiness is finding a midnight cycle-wala who sells coffee and even Bournvita? When they say this city never sleeps, it really doesn't. This is probably the only place on Earth where can you find a traffic jam at three in the morning. Honestly, it really doesn't matter what time it is, there are always people going somewhere. Speaking of people, why in the world are they this nice? How do you explain to these gentlemen who offer women their seats in a bus that for anyone who's not a local, it's just creepy. The rest of the world runs for shelter when it rains, This city runs out to get wet. Nowhere else on the planet is it a thing to make a trip just to get wet in the rain or worse, dance under a waterfall. People take pride here in the city's slums & all that happens within and crib about the most expensive house in the world being there too. What is the point of having a bit of every possible Indian thing in one city? What is the rest of the country supposed to do? Another thing the people of this city have never heard of is limits. I don't mean in terms of attitude, I'm talking about city limits. There are folks who live in Dahanu and Karjat who still call themselves Mumbaikars. What's more is that these are the same people who travel to Churchgate or Victoria Terminus for work. For those who don't know where these places are, they're three hours away, one way. For most of the world, commuting to the work comprises of reading, listening to music, maybe catching up on some shows, making a few calls etc. Well, that isn't the case here. Traveling to work here means fighting for your life to get into the train, making space for folks to play cards, trying to hear your thoughts over bhajans that are loud enough to reach two compartments on each side and of course, hoping that the sweat on your shirt is just yours. What's even more bizarre is that everyone here does it willingly as if they were getting paid for it. This city reeks of brotherhood and is annoyingly compassionate. There's no sense of struggle here because everyone is willing to help. Well, at least the roads keep the people here grounded. They remind us all that no matter how expensive your car is, you will always be late for work. There's vada pav, missal pav, anda paav, maska pav, bhurji pav, kheema pav, pav bhaaji and even brunn pav. God forbid if pav ever runs out, this city will cease to exist. I hate how strange this place is. It's like an addiction. You curse it everyday, you swear you'll never go back and there you are, sipping cutting chai under an umbrella in the middle of the pouring rain. I hate that God sending the metro so late in our lives, I hate the pointless monorail for still being pointless after roughly two years. This city is like that ex who won't let you move on. It's just so easy it is to fall in love with it.
Signing off with a few lines from a Bollywood song (translated to English) -
Lakhs of people come and settle down in Mumbai, everyday.
They fall in love with the city and get trapped in its fast paced lifestyle.
